О проекте | About the project
Мапер — шрифт для карт, схем и путеводителей, основной задачей которого является хорошая читаемость в мелких кеглях и на сложном фоне. Второстепенная задача Мапера — разделение информации разного вида типографическими методами. Часто, при создании карт или схем, необходимо выделить разнородные объекты, такие как названия: рек, горных вершин, районов городов, стран, океанов и так далее. Это можно сделать не прибегая к разным шрифтам, а используя всего одну гарнитуру.
Рисунок Мапера предельно прост и служит задаче различимости знаков в мелком кегле. Для этого были отброшены почти все декоративные элементы и основная часть работы заключалась в подборе пропорций, поиске толщин штрихов и прорабатывании конструкций знаков.
На данный момент Мапер состоит из текстового начертания и курсива для выделения. В дальнейшем я планирую расширить гарнитуру, включив в нее начертание для очень мелких кеглей (около 5 пунктов), несколько видов текстового начертания, различающихся по ширине и насыщенности, а так же дисплейное начертание.
Maper is a font developed to be used at maps, guide books and schemes. It’s primary objective is to provide a good readability in small sizes and on mixed background. Secondary objective is to divide various information by typographic means. In process of map or scheme-making it’s quite often needed to define various objects, such as river names, mountain peaks, city districts, country names, oceans etc. And to succeed you don’t need multiple fonts, one type family is enough.
Maper character is pretty much plain to provide maximum readability in small sizes. To achieve this, almost all decorative elements were casted away and most part of the work consisted in searching the best proportions, defining stroke widths and working out construction of characters.
At the moment Maper includes text typeface and italic for accentuation. In the future I’d like to extend the type family and to add typeface for extremely small type sizes (about 5 pt), few styles of text typefaces various in width and weight and a screen typeface.

About the course:
The course "Type and Typography" is made especially for practicing designers to improve their skills in communication design and for those who are really willing to higher their professional skills in type and typography.
This unique course doesn't have anything in common in Russian practice. There was no type education In Russian culture before. Type education was always a part of education, but never as a main one.
The course will help students to find themselves in modern Type culture, extend in type history, to get calligraphy skills, to practice in modern production technologies and so on.
The duration of the course is two semesters, 16 working hours per week.
To whom it may concern
This one year course is made especially to improve the practical skills of the students. As a final result each student has to show his diploma, which is both theoretical research and production of new type/typefamily.
